sooooo not gonna add an image to this one cause of painful copyright stuff...really??? lol another thing for another post
anyway getting back to the topic, The MMA fight movie Warrior was highly reviewed, acclaimed, praised, all that stuff, and trust me its good, i saw it in the cinemas when it was released
but.....the crucial element i forgot when i decided to rewatch it, the ending...just blllaahhh...well to understand my beef so to speak i have to tell you a bit about the movie in case you havent seen it:
The movie in my opinion is heavily centered on Tom Hardy aka movie name Tommy Riordan aka mega awesome badass who easily bashes and knocks out one of the world contenders at his local gym (in a warmup)
so yeah lots of indepth stuff on tommy, who at the start and throughout movie learn has issues with father, and moved out at a young age with his mother due to his dads past alcholism, many other aspects of it are subtly shown/talked about but anywayyyyyy
cut to the friendly physics teacher and family man, tommys distant brother, Brendan Conlon, who does mma as a secret side thing at stripclub parking lots, a good and decent guy in his own right, but in my opinion by no means a fighter (which ill touch on soon) and suddenly gets suspended form teaching after other staff/principal find out he'd been fighting, without a job for a while, and house/family fees/whatever else hes got going decides to try and join the MMA tournament sparta, winner takes all 5 mil prize moneyand heres where it gets interesting....tommy decides to enter for some reason which eludes me, but later on satates giving all money to widow of army buddy if won, while brendan doing it for his and familys lifestyle - still ok right?
so to the fights...Tommy like the true awesome badass one, knocks out/dominates and beats every guy, while on the exact opposite spectrum, Brendan is quite literally getting the crap beaten out of him in EVERY fight and only squeezing his way through and winning via submission, and then of course it comes down to brother vs brother - if you dont want spoilers now's the time to look away-so tommy continues on his way it seems, beating down brendan in the fight, though his brother kept saying emotional stuff i dont know! loool but yeah somehow brendan ends up dislocating tommy's his shoulder since he refused to tap, and then tommy continues to fight, but obviously with a dislocated shoulder theres not much you can do, so eventually brendan again got into another submission fianlly getting tommy to tap out and then saying all this forgiveness and im sorry i love you stuff...arrrrrrr
alright dont get me wrong im not gonna bash that part of the movie in itself, im doing it for its placement...wheres the badass tommy gone??? wheres all my awesome in depth development???? wheres that guy who beat the crap out of everyone gone!
all gone..... :( while brendans story may in its own context/focus/movie be a good one, in this movie its just ovverrode the complete movie pretty much and just took a dump on the ending for me putting it quite simply thats what it did to the ending, bottom line, dont go ruining my awesome/badass/violent movie with some family man emotional guy winning in the end!!! save that for another movie!!!!!! so yeah thats my reason whyyyy i think tom hardy definately should have won, yes very opinionated i know, lol but sure beats non biased reviews for sure!!! 1000x more fun to write lol
If Tommy would have won the family would have fallen apart. I think it's implied that Brendan is going to share the money with Tommy, and they're all going to be one big happy family again.
ReplyDeleteI agree, that is true.
DeleteI agree, that is true.
DeleteYOU'RE AN IDIOT
ReplyDeleteI feel like more could have been done with the ending. The final fight should have been Tommy v. Koba. After brendan gets his ass beat by koba he goes talk to his brother. They argue and while in the heat of the argument Brendan tells him that he'll lose his home and etc. Tommy walks off on him and brendan sheds a tear. In the final match koba and tommy is going toe to toe. In the final round tommy takes a couple punches almost defeated tommy takes all his energy and knocks out Koba. Tommy passes out because of his exauhstion and his brother runs to the ring to help him out of the gym. Flash 2 weeks ahead Brendan is packing up due to his home being forclosed there's a knock on the door. It's tommy with a check for 2.5 million dollars. They hug and Tommy walks away. He gives the other half to Manny's wife. Now tommy becomes a professional fighter with Brendan as his guy in the corner.
ReplyDeleteI think it would have been a good because i personally was not moved by that ending. I was pissed more than anything. Ain't no way in hell brendan beats all the heavy hitters. Brendan is not no damn disney princess he should of got his ass destroyed by koba.
This ia the fairy tale we all wanted..
DeleteBut this is not how drama goes

Tommy should have won and split the money between his brother and his dead friends wife. he didn't care about the money. what happened to the friends wife story line that was such a central thread. they just dropped it.
ReplyDeletePeople forget the fact that tommy was fighting his brother not some random opponent,we don't actually know what was going through his mind and I'm sure he was holding back, even after his brother injured him I think he kept going more to prove to himself that he can fight and hurt his brother cause of their history while in reality his heart was keeping him back.....and that's why he only tapped out after hearing Brendan say he loves him....He didn't need to fight anymore...It wasn't about his friends wife anymore...It was more personal....
ReplyDeleteyes finally someone who has my point of view, i was literally like, what the actual F**k when Brendan won, Tommy could of gone in smack Brendan out, Tommy 5 million in the bank, the ending to this film really pisses me off. i think there should of been an alternative ending made where Tommy wins.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing. Tommy vs Koba is what should've happened, with Tommy avenging his brother, saving his brothers house, and his war brothers family. That storyline just dropped, and it shouldn't have. Now Manny's wife gets nothing. Tommy could've entered another tournament too. Tommy vs Koba is what the world still needs. Monster's
DeleteI agree that Tommy should have been the winner, not only is he established as the more righteous character in the film (I mean he seems the more important protagonist due to his extensive character development and poor fortune), but he consistently displays better prowess in the ring. Even if Tommy was holding back, Brendan had taken a ridiculous amount of abuse from Koba and his other opponents and should have been in a very poor position for the fight. I agree that there should have been an alternate ending in which Tommy is dominating Brendan in the ring but doesn't knock him out as he is venting his aggression and there would have been the whole forgiveness scene but it would come as Tommy is continually beating a Brendan that refuses to stay down - instead Tommy would win and be taken into custody but would give half of the money to Brendan with the other half going to Manny's family, which would satisfy all of the realistic and dramatic criteria of the film
ReplyDeleteNo what should of happened was while both of them are in the ring fighting each other in the 3rd round tommy knocks his brother out while getting kicked in the face and knocked out himself. That way they can still have that hurt walk off together and they split the money so there is never a true winner
ReplyDeleteI think the ending is fine. Tommy is said to be a better wrestler/ground fighter but maybe he hasnt worked much in that area due to the factthat 1.he is a loner so no one to grapple with 2 he kos everyone he fights in first round so probally would gas in reality with it going the distance. Brendan clearly has a chin and heart( probally from all the beatings he took growing up and wanting to protect his family). Aside from this the film is about family being pulled apart and the emotion which most people can relate to in some way the mma is just a plot line to run with that. The film is underated has great acting, emotional script and is entertaining and i think does its best to be authentic. One of my all time favs
ReplyDeleteSee and I think if you follow the premise tommy would have been served best to win. After the argue with his dad at the slots it shows that Tommy has a sensitive side and his anger is misdirection to the sensitive side he feels lost and abandon by his family. Getting the win would resolve the issues and vindicate his frustration as it did when he realized he hurt his dad he comforted him in the hotel room I feel tommy is a good guy who doesn't want to be one alot more plot growth in him winning and he would of shared the money and forgiven his brother.
ReplyDeleteReuniting the family and the relationships with both maybe a scene with him meeting his nieces seems like his brother had the wife and kids and Tommy had the memory of a dead mother and his failures in life deserting and not being able to look after his mom its clear he feels this way.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes this movies ending fail, is how they cry "judge" at the late hit, and rightly so, but it's cool that Brendon takes repeated unanswered hits to the face.
ReplyDeleteIn the first round we see him take multiple strikes WITHOUT INTELLIGENTLY DEFENDING, ie, his hands are up but he's not able to adequately parry or block strikes, that's a referee stoppage from strikes in literally every single martial arts tournament ever, except in this specific fight for some reason.
Tommy won the fight in round one by the standards set in the MMA world that the tournament is apparently abiding by.
But, you know, brothers and stuff 😒
Tommy was my guy in this movie but don’t forget fellas he was going to go to military jail anyway, so no fairy tale ending! I think the reconciliation and possible money split was a achieved right after the fight as it should be and no waiting for tommy to get out later and extending the story. I think the ending was good without going into too much detail from the director.
ReplyDeleteHere's the thing about something people are missing: CONCEPT! Tommy vs Koba wouldn't have had the impact that Brendan vs Tommy had. Remember, it was a shock to everyone that Tommy and Brendan were brothers fighting against each other, as Brendan never told anyone (including his wife) that Tommy was back.
ReplyDeleteSure Tommy was a beast in the ring, but not only was Brendan the more experienced fighter, but Tommy didn't have his father in his corner. After Brendan broken Tommy's arm, Brendan wanted to stop fighting him. Tommy was fighting off of pure rage that was built up from childhood, while Brendan had even more to lose, but still loved his brother. Brendan never actually wanted to fight him in the first place, but he had to. He was forced to actually BREAK Tommy out of all of that pent-up hatred that he built, and when Brendan saw his father, they nodded at each other, since the father knew Brendan had to break Tommy. When Brendan told Tommy that he was sorry for leaving him, and that he loved him, that pain that Tommy had on the inside was released.
It was PERSONAL, and it made way more sense that there was a fight between the brothers. It was more than just the money, it was about reuniting and the classic "settle the differences in the ring like men" concept. Plus, the film heavily implied that Brendan and Tommy's relationship was resolved and Brendan was going to bail Tommy out and help his fallen comrade's wife.
Brendan might of fought tommy alot growing up. Sometimes with history things have different outcomes. Also if you look back grapplers win alot against knock out artists. Dont get me wrong I would of put my money on tommy too. But I've seen this before in family's where history plays a role. Most of the time if they used to fight alot growing up.
